Muslin- You Rock!

Okay, so maybe I sound a little crazy, but have you ever appreciated a fabric more than plain old cotton muslin?

I had a muslin cloth glued to my shoulder for at least the first year after my children were born, having 3, that’s 3 years of muslin shoulder! To the point that every one of my children became so attached to the feeling of muslin against their skin they used a muslin cloth as their comforter, with my 10-year-old still sleeping with one today!

I remember the first time I was buying them in Mothercare, before my first baby had arrived, thinking they were not cheap for a thin cloth square to wipe baby sick and spills. How wrong I was.  They were not only exceptional value for money, but they were complete saviours in so many ways. I used them as a burping cloth, cover whilst breast feeding, buggy shade when sleeping, comforter, swaddle, in place of a bib, nappy mat when on the move, even as a towel when I didn’t have one!

Aside from modern day parents showing complete respect to the multi-uses of the humble muslin cloth - did you know that muslin used to be a fabric as highly prized as silk? Arriving on our shores from modern day Bangladesh in the early 17th century, it was mainly imported for use in ladies’ garments and soft furnishing such as curtains. Through the years it was quickly recognised that muslin could be useful in so many different industries and went on to be used in culinary arts, theatre, photography and even medicine.

So, next time you see a parent with a muslin shoulder – show a little love & respect.
