Swaddling Your Baby

Swaddling has been practiced for thousands of years and many pieces of artwork from Cyprus and Crete support its ancient origins.

Young babies love to be swaddled, especially in those early days after birth because it makes a baby feel like they are back in the womb and protects them from the natural startle reflex. Although there is no harm caused by this reflex, it can disrupt sleep which, as we know, can lead to all sorts of other problems. Swaddling helps your baby feel calm and secure, almost like they are being hugged.

Blankets made from muslin are breathable and soft so are great for swaddling your baby. Anything weightier or quilted may not be safe for very young children. In fact because muslin is breathable it prevent your baby from overheating whilst still keeping them snug.

It is always important to use common sense when swaddling a baby like always keep a baby on its back to avoid SIDS, make sure the swaddle is snug so the material doesn’t come loose whilst baby is sleeping. If your baby sleeps for long period throughout the day, swaddling may not be suitable as movement is restricted.
